Ban On New Thermal Generation Was Bad Policy

December 16, 2008

I am very pleased that the ban on new thermal generation of electricity is to be gone by the end of the week.  This was one of the previous Government’s climate change policies that we liked the least.  Modern gas fired plants are emit far lower levels of carbon than old coal fired stations yet the policy seemed to ensure that Huntly was going to be used for many years to come.  Moreover, the ban seemed likely to continue the ridiculous situation of us losing much of what we generate because we transmit power over long distances to the places it is needed (eg Auckland).  A gas powered station on the outskirts of Auckland will be a very efficient option for a company such as Genesis.
